Chapter Five
My best guess is that Sophieâs with Jeremy. I flip my phone over in my hand a few times while I consider calling her, then calling Jeremyâjust to know that sheâs safe, and that she has someone to talk to. That she doesnât have to go through this rollercoaster of emotions aloneâfrom the anticipation she must have felt while waiting for me to come home so she could pop the question, to the havoc my words must have wreaked on her.
I donât know what to do. I pace up and down the living room, glancing through the window, hoping I will see her car drive back to the house. But the street remains empty.
I go upstairs to check what sheâs taken with her. Not that much of her stuff seems to be missing. She packed as though sheâs coming back. I know that, rationally, I shouldnât want her to come back, but of course I want her to. Sheâs only been gone fifteen minutes and I miss her already. This was never going to be easy for me, either. I should have planned my own heartbreak better. But thereâs no such thing as planning for heartbreak, for the cold hard steel of a knife piercing your heart, despite knowing itâs coming. And Sophie had every right to tell me to go fuck myselfâit looks like Iâve done a good job of that already.
When I canât take it anymore, and because I have lost someone in an accident before, I call Jeremy. I need to know Sophieâs safe.
âHey Dolo.â His voice is all cheer. Clearly, he doesnât know yet. âHappy birthday, or am I still not allowed to say that?â
âThanks, umâ¦â
âVasily says happy birthday as well.â I hear a manâs voice in the background.
âYeah, thanks, I take it you havenât heard from Sophie?â
âHm, no⦠Should I have?â
âYou might.â I pause. If anyone knew about Sophie planning to propose to me, it must be her best friend, Jeremy. âWe⦠fell out.â Fell out? I guess you could call it that. âShe might be on her way to you. I just want to know that sheâs physically fine. If you could just let me know.â
âWait, wait, wait.â Jeremyâs not going to let me off the hook easily, I know that much. Itâs not his style. âWhat did you fall out over?â
âDamn it, Jeremy⦠she asked me to marry her.â
âI know!â He canât hide the excitement in his voice. âSince when is that something to fall out over?â He goes silent. âOh.â A deep sigh. âDid you say no? To Soph?â
âI couldnât very well say yes, could I?â
âOf course you could. Thatâs exactly what you say when a woman who loves and adores you asks you to marry her. You say yes without qualms, with zero doubt, with all the power in your voice.â
Of course, Jeremyâs going to be all dramatic about it.
âI got ordained so I could marry the two of you, by the way,â he adds.
âWe wonât be needing your services.â The deflation I feel in my body has reached my voice.
